For first-year students in post-secondary education, their skills in such fundamentals as writing, citing and how to look at work critically (both their peers or reading articles) is often major area of weakness. By incorporating peer grading in a series of small stakes assignments, Prof. Mary-Helen Armour saw a vast improvement in the quality of work. Students were receiving multiple pieces of feedback through peer evaluations which made them more aware of the learning gaps that they needed to fill.
